Laminate Flooring FAQ

How many boxes of laminate do I need?
Calculate: room area + waste factor, then divide by sq ft per box. A 12×12 room (144 sq ft + 10% = 159 sq ft) ÷ 24 sq ft/box = 7 boxes needed.
What AC rating do I need for my laminate floor?
AC3 handles all residential use including busy kitchens and hallways. AC4 is recommended for light commercial or rental properties. AC5 is for heavy commercial like retail stores.
Can laminate flooring get wet?
Standard laminate should not get wet — water seeping into joints causes irreversible swelling. Water-resistant laminate handles spills for 24+ hours. For truly wet areas (bathrooms, laundry), use waterproof vinyl plank instead.
Does laminate need underlayment?
Yes, unless your laminate has pre-attached underlayment. Over concrete, add a vapor barrier. Underlayment provides sound absorption, thermal insulation, and minor subfloor leveling. Never double up underlayment.
How long does laminate flooring last?
Standard laminate: 10–15 years. Premium laminate (AC3+): 15–25 years. Unlike hardwood, laminate cannot be refinished. Longevity depends on quality, traffic, and maintenance.
How much laminate flooring for a 200 sq ft room?
200 sq ft + 10% waste = 220 sq ft. At ~24 sq ft/box, you need 10 boxes. Cost: $220–$660. Click-lock planks are ideal for DIY — no glue or nails.
How many boxes of laminate for 1,000 sq ft?
1,000 + 10% waste = 1,100 sq ft. At 24 sq ft/box = 46 boxes. Cost: $1,100–$3,300. Buy from the same lot for consistent color.

How Much Laminate for Any Project?

How much laminate for a hallway? A 4×12 hallway needs 53 sq ft with waste = 3 boxes. Laminate is ideal for hallways due to its scratch resistance and easy click-lock installation. Choose AC3 or AC4 rated for high-traffic areas.

Can I install laminate over tile? Yes, if the tile is flat and level. Use a thin underlayment (2mm) over the tile for cushioning and moisture protection. No need to remove existing flooring — laminate floats above it.
